Why work abroad?
Working abroad can be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of your life. It often allows you, even requires you, to become an immediate and integral part of the society in which you are living. It also frequently develops and demands a level of personal and professional responsibility many young people have not yet known. Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live in a foreign city or going to work on the bus or subway with everyone else who is 'off to the office' for the day, listening to their conversations (and joining in), seeing what they're reading, watching the way they interact and how they behave towards each other? Your language skills, of course, will develop exponentially depending on where you come from. And there will be many opportunities to make lasting friendships, and also to establish contacts and gain experience that may be of benefit to you in your future career. You will learn new skills and new ways of doing things -- whether you're working in a pub, as an accountant, or as a security guard. There are few other experiences that can so intimately reveal to you the basic fabric of another culture, allowing you to understand it -- and perhaps even your own culture -- from a very new perspective. Some visas also allow you to travel while you work and this gives you the opportunity to really experience the different cultures of a new country.
The other major reason, off course, is to earn some extra cash, especially, if you are from South Africa and you are able to earn some Pound or Dollar. Currently many young people are unemployed or cannot find suitable positions according to their qualifications. Opportunities for unskilled workers in South Africa are limited, and this place most young people in a “catch 22” position. They cannot get a job because they have no experience and they cannot gain experience without a job. In countries like the UK and America, many basic or unskilled positions are available, and this allows young people to gain experience.
Very few other experiences force young people to become independent and responsible so quickly, as living and working in a foreign country. Many parents tell us that only after a few weeks their children have become a lot more independent.
