The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme / Tier 1 (General) visa allows you to work unrestricted in the UK.
It's designed for people with high-level skills, qualifications and work experience to come to the UK.
Unlike regular work permits, you do not need a job offer to apply for this visa and can switch jobs, making it popular with people looking to stay on in the UK.
Initially you are given leave to remain in the UK for two years, after which you can apply for an extension that would give you a further three years.
Changes to the highly skilled visa programme
From the 30 June 2008, the highly skilled visa programme was replaced by the Tier 1 (General) visa.
One of the biggest changes is that anyone currently in the UK on a working holidaymaker visa can no longer get a highly skilled visa from within the UK. You have to return to your home country and lodge the application there.
To get a Tier 1 (general) visa you'll need to be able to prove your educational qualifications, previous earnings and employment experience. These requirements are broadly similar to those under the previous highly skilled visa.
However, there are new requirements that mean you have to have English language skills and have money in the bank( Around£2800).
